Gareth
MBBS, FRCSEd, FRCS
Appointed to the Royal London Hospital in 1992 as an NHS consultant as an orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in lower limb joint arthroplasty to continue the clinical practice and research responsibilities established by Michael Freeman, at the Bone and Joint Research Unit. Gareth supported studies that were undertaken into implant fixation, wear-products and prosthetic outcome with many related publications.
Additionally, he collaborated with the Materials Scientists at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Materials Research at QMUL. This involved teaching and examining on their BSc course, as well as supervising projects and candidates undertaking higher degrees. His professional interests have focused on primary and revision joint arthroplasty in the lower limb. Additionally, with his haematological colleagues he developed the joint replacement service for patients affected by Sickle Cell Disease and haemophilia. In a similar manner he has supported the transplant service in treating patients with osteonecrosis.
In 2012 his continuous contribution to undergraduate education and orthopaedic research was acknowledged with the award of an honorary Professorship in Orthopaedics at the Bone and Joint Research Unit, The William Harvey Centre, St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London. He continues as an Honorary Professor in the Centre for Medical Education within the Institute of Health Sciences Education.
He was a Regional Clinical Co-ordinator for London on the founding of the National Joint Registry in 2003 and served as a member for London until 2017. He continues at the NJR linkman and Hospital Data Manager at RLH.
He is an Associate Editor of the British volume of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, now known as the Bone and Joint Journal. He also reviews for the Journal of Arthroplasty.
