about
Usama
MBChB, MPH, MRCS
Usama is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery on the Royal London Hospitals Orthopaedic Training Scheme (RLHOTS). He aims to develop evidence at the interface of surgery and public health to improve surgical outcomes regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Having completed a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), he is interested in using routine health data to enable quicker and better decision making for surgeons and policy makers whilst bringing to the fore, consideration of wider determinants of health in surgery. At LSHTM, he used routinely collected data from the World Health Organisation to analyse the effect of road traffic laws on the epidemiology of road traffic collisions in over 25 countries.
Graduating from medical school in 2017, he was awarded a prestigious NIHR Academic Foundation Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Warwick where he was a trial co-ordinator and lead author for the Patellar Instability: Physiotherapy or Surgery feasibility RCT. He also worked with industry partners on the ExACT trial and with Professor Andy Metcalfe on the START:REACTS trial investigating the efficacies of novel implants in orthopaedic surgery.
Usama was born at The Royal London Hospital and joins the team at Barts from the run-through Trauma and Orthopaedic programme in the West Midlands having ranked in the top-10 nationally for Core-Surgical Training. Whilst in Birmingham, he was part of a multi-disciplinary team that won almost £100,000 in funding to investigate avoidable determinants of readmission for patients suffering from neck of femur fractures as part of the ARTHUR study and helped design the Patient-Public Involvement (PPI) component of the study.
